WEBPosted June 20, 2017. Just wanted to get a poll on varying options of most efficient yet safest way to mill black powder without a ball mill. I used to use a coffee grinder however the last time I milled some I resorted to a mortar and pestle instead, which was far too much work. I know ball milling is the most common for large quantities.

WEBNov 9, 2018 · The only "safe" way is to "hypermill" each ingredient (dextrin with the charcoal) separately and then combine them to premeasured water to make a putty ball and screen it to make the grains. Dry and sort by mesh size. Don't take chances, don't break the law. Right, process can be followed. Thanks for this advice.

I highly recommend granulating your powder. Just dampen with enough water to make a cohesive, crumbly ball when squeezed, and screen. I would use an 12 mesh.

WEBSep 4, 2020 · If screen granulating BP typically a 3 or 4 mesh screen is used. Once dry the powder is classified by screening specific cuts like 2FA (4+12), 4FA (12+20). Trying to granulate through smaller screens is hard as they clog easily. I'd consider 8 mesh about the smallest practical size for that purpose.

Using a rock tumbler, you can make black powder faster by milling the charcoal and potassium nitrate separately. 3 component milling takes much longer to make good powder. WEBDec 11, 2023 · I've found you want to dry them as fast as possible to get a hotter powder as well as a more consistent one from batch to batch. I put the BP in maybe 1/2" layers on plastic trays (I would avoid shiny metal) and put in direct sun and even use a fan blowing across the top if possible. Should be dry in 20 or 30 min.
